Programs to promote Italian Language and Culture

The Dante Alighieri Society offers morning classes for children and evening classes for adults.

Location:
All classes meet at the Dante Alighieri Cultural Center  41 Hampshire Street, Cambridge.

The Dante Alighieri Society is conveniently located near Kendall Square, on the corner of Hampshire Street and Cardinal Medeiros Avenue. The Kendall Square / MIT stop on the MBTA Red Line is within ten minutes walking distance from the Center. Free parking is available at the center. See Map.
 

Class Size:
In order to run a class, there must be a minimum of eight students.
 

Registration:
You may register in person at the Dante prior to the start of classes, or by mail, by sending the application form and a check payable to the Dante Alighieri Society of Massachusetts. The office is open Monday - Friday 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM. In addition, we will be open until 7 p.m. for pre-registration on September 20 and 21.

Courses Offered and Class Schedule:
Classes are held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for a period of 10 weeks, except where otherwise specified. In order to run a class, there must be a minimum of eight students. Please note: There is no difference between PLIDA classes A and B. The letters are used to distinguish classes offered on Tuesdays (A) from the same classes offered on Wednesdays (B).

PLIDA 101A
(Beginner)
This course is designed for students with little or no knowledge of Italian and aims to develop students' basic communicative skills in Italian.

Building upon the basic foundation provided by level 101, in this course students will further develop their linguistic competency in comprehension, writing and oral communication.

PLIDA 103A
(Beginner)
This course completes level A1 of language proficiency and continues to emphasize the improvement of oral comprehension and creative expression. It also focuses on helping students prepare for the PLIDA - A1 level exam.

With this course students start level A2 of language proficiency. They refine their use of verb tenses, enrich their vocabulary and learn how to communicate with greater precision and confidence.

The PLIDA Textbooks:
The textbooks adopted for the PLIDA classes have been specifically designed for use in the international PLIDA courses. The title is Chiaro! A1 (by Giulia de Savorgnani and Beatrice Bergero, Firenze, 2011) for the 101, 102, and 103 courses and Chiaro! A2 (by Giulia de Savorgnani and Cinzia Cordera Alberti, Firenze, 2011) for the 104 class. These textbooks, that come with a CD ROM, may be purchased at the Dante Alighieri Society (41 Hampshire St., Cambridge, MA 02139).

Winter 2012 Non-PLIDA Class Schedule

TUESDAYS (7:00 - 9:30)
January 17th to March 20th
Non-PLIDA 201 (ex Non-PLIDA 105 A) This course is for those who have an intermediate knowledge of the language and intend to perfect it. There will be analysis of complex syntactical structures, literary genres, and techniques of written presentation.
Non-PLIDA 202 (ex Non-PLIDA 105) This course is for those who have an intermediate knowledge of the language and intend to perfect it. There will be analysis of complex syntactical structures, literary genres, and techniques of written presentation.

Wednesdays (7:00 - 9:30)
January 18th to March 21st
Non-PLIDA 200 (ex Non-PLIDA 107) This course, conducted in Italian at the advanced intermediate level , enables students to enhance their Italian through the screenings of short films. The movies are accompanied by pertinent textbooks conducive to oral practice (listening comprehension and speaking). The ensuing class discussions create the basis for written assignments. A reference grammar provides the learners with the appropriate tools to review and expand the linguistic structures used in the movies viewed.

Textbooks for Non-PLIDA Courses:

Textbook for non-PLIDA 105/105A: The textbook for these classes is Parliamo Italiano by Branciforte, Grassi, Houghton Mifflin, 1998.

Textbook for Italian through cinema: The textbooks for this course are Cinema Italiano in DVD (Books level 2 and level 3), edited by A.Lorenzotti - R. Aiello, ALMA Edizioni, Firenze. Registered students may purchase these books at the Dante Alighieri at a 20% discount. Reference grammar: Complete Italian Grammar, Danesi, M., McGraw Hill.

Tuition:
Tuition for most courses is $195.00, but it's $175.00 if you register in advance (at least 5 days before the first class). Approximately a 15% discount for members.
Payments must be made in cash or by check  payable to the Dante Alighieri Society of Massachusetts. There is a $15 fee for returned checks. Tuition must be paid in full before the beginning of the first class.

Tuition for the summer session is $160.00, but is $140.00 if you register in advance.

Tuition for the Italian Cinema:   $195 ($175) Wed. 7pm - 9:30pm

Tuition for the Reading Italian:  $195 ($175) Wed. 7pm - 9:30pm

Tuition for the Reading Italian2:  $120 ($110) Wed. 5pm - 6:30pm

Refunds:
Students who wish to withdraw from a class must notify the instructor no later than the second class meeting. Tuition will be refunded less an administration fee of $30. In the event the course is cancelled, full tuition will be refunded.
